Guides / Run categories

What sets your run category

Category is not seniority. It is the average weekly hours your specific roster expects — a column of the salary grid, not a percentage on top.

Category F is 40–44.9 hours a week; category A is 65 or more. The same doctor can be on different categories in different jobs, and a run's category comes from its run description — a local document held by the district, not published in the agreement.

RDA (NZRDA) CA 2026-2028

Category is set by the expected average weekly hours in the run description, and is a column of the salary table rather than a multiplier. Categories F (40-44.9 hrs) through A (65+ hrs). cl. 8.1.1

  • Full rotating shifts over 24 hours / 7 days are categorised a minimum of two categories above what the hours alone would give. Applies to EDs, ICUs and other services as agreed. cl. 8.1.2(a)
  • RMOs employed as Relievers are paid two categories above the category of the majority of the runs they cover. cl. 8.1.3
  • RMOs employed in ED and Intensive Care Units are paid a minimum of category C. cl. 8.1.5
  • Where an uplift would push an RMO above category A, the balance is paid by moving up year steps instead. Above the top of the house officer scale: year 2 cat A or year 3 cat B is paid cat A year 3 + $5,300; year 3 cat A is paid + $10,600. Above the top of the registrar scale: year 8 cat A or year 9 cat B is paid cat A year 9 + $10,000; year 9 cat A is paid + $15,000. Payable only for time spent in the relief/reliever role. cl. 8.1.4
  • Unrostered hours. For runs not on full rotating shifts, ordinary hours that are not rostered count as hours worked, up to 8 per day, when setting the category. Hours are not counted for days completely free of rostered duties, other than 'sleep days' following rostered night duties.

STONZ RMO CA 2026-2028

Categories F (40-44.9 hrs) through A (65+ hrs), set by expected average weekly hours. cl. 12.1.1

  • Full rotating shifts over 24 hours / 7 days: minimum two categories above. cl. 12.1.2(a)
  • Relievers: two categories above the majority of runs covered. Does not apply to a reliever embedded in the roster. cl. 12.1.3
  • ED and ICU: minimum category C. cl. 12.1.2(a)
  • Above category A the balance is paid as steps. Above the top of the house officer scale: cat A year 3 + $5,300, or + $10,600 for year 3 cat A. Above the top of the registrar scale: cat A step 9 + $10,000, or + $15,000 for step 9 cat A. Payable only for time in the relief/reliever role. cl. 12.1.4
  • Unrostered hours. Unrostered ordinary hours count as hours worked, up to 8 per day, except for days completely free of rostered duties. The minimum break under clause 17.4.6 is deemed ordinary hours when those days fall Monday to Friday.
